Split-Frame House

This Palisades fire redesign uses a steel framing kit-of-parts and fire-hardened exterior materials to rethink conventional design and construction.

The design began with notions of protection from not only fire events, but from views of the neighboring homes as well as noise protection from a busy street. This confluence of forces resulted in the design of a home, bracketed in two roof volumes featuring standing seam metal roofing. The home features an ADU on the ground level and primary living spaces on the upper level with access to a terracing backyard above. Improvements from the original layout of the home create expansive gardens while reducing the length of the driveway. Resilient materials are used to fire-harden the home including metal panels printed to give the warmth of wood without the combustibility and maintenance concerns. Vaulted ceilings create an elevated living space while sliding pocket doors connect interior and exterior spaces.
